3 AM Is a Different Country
thought2025
There's a version of you that only exists at 3 AM.
Not the tired version. Not the drunk version. The real one. The one that shows up when the world goes quiet and there's no performance left and the only audience is you.
That's when I write. Not because I schedule it. Because the words show up uninvited. Like they've been waiting all day for everyone else to leave the room.
3 AM is when the filter comes off. When you can write "I miss you" and mean it in twelve different directions. When you can admit that the thing you built today isn't as good as you told yourself it was. When you can sit with silence and hear what it's actually saying.
I like silence but there's really none. I wrote that years ago. At 3 AM, obviously. Because at 3 AM you realize the silence isn't empty. It's full. Full of the things you didn't say during the day. The things you swallowed. The things you smiled through.
I've written most of my poetry at 3 AM. I've made some of my best decisions at 3 AM. I've also made some of my worst. But even the worst ones were honest, and I think honest decisions age better than strategic ones.
There's a whole world that exists between midnight and dawn that most people never visit. They sleep through it. Which is fine. Healthy, even. But they're missing something.
They're missing the country of 3 AM. Where the rules are different. Where the light is different. Where you are different.
I live there sometimes. More often than I should, probably.
But everything I've written that's ever mattered came from that country.
